| FRANK BRAUTIGAM SINGS HIS FAVORITE ARIAS If it wasn’t for this rare 1968 audiocassette, we may never have heard of Frank Brautigam, or more accurately: we may never have been able to hear his extraordinary voice. Luckily, a dedicated stage technician was smart enough to put up a microphone that day in Orange County, New Jersey, when Frank was getting ready to sing for David Suskind, the famous conductor, who had invited him because he was so impressed with his voice. And that’s the good news. - In those days it was common practice for opera singers to warm up and rehearse to the accompaniment of a recording. In Frank’s case his records were pretty much worn out from intensive use. And that’s the bad news. This audiocassette, though a unique treasure, needed thorough digital re-mastering to make it acceptable for nowadays ears, to the maximum extent possible. Hundreds of ticks and scratches had to be removed, however, in order to preserve the warmth and brilliance of the voice, there was clearly a limit to what could be done with the tools available. So: bear with us. Concentrate on the voice and Frank’s interpretation of the classic arias we all love, and then wonder why he never became a big star like, let’s say, Jerome Hines who, by the way, was also there in New Jersey that very same day.

Frank Brautigam’s talent is obvious even for laymen’s ears. A voice like his, not formally trained, but captivating and instantly attractive, is very rare. If there ever was a ‘natural’, he is it. A clear favorite of many musical directors, he performs several times in lavish productions, but at the end of the day Frank chooses not to pursue a full time career as a singer but instead keep his day time job and try to provide for his family just like the rest of us. He must have had his reasons and may be someday he will tell us. Back in the days in Amsterdam, Holland, his love for singing ignited when he was only 10. He toured Europe as a member of a famous Dutch choir, then, desperate to find his way in the world he became a sailor and ended up in Canada where he started performing in Toronto. Now in his seventies and living a quiet life in Maine, the voice a bit worn out, his love for singing hasn’t diminished. And we aren’t giving up hope that sooner or later more recordings will be discovered. |
